First time I heard Belle and Sebastian was last Christmas.
I was back in Scotland for holiday and was visiting my friend Susan. When
we sat in the front room, she played a CD saying this is a new band and
very good. It was dark cold night, snow falls on the ground and on the
pavement. After I listened whole "if you're feeling sinister"
album by Belle and Sebastian, I was completely enchanted by their music.
I felt their music is something like mixing Carlos Jobin's ennui and dry
cynicism from those 50'S-early60'S British Film like "Prime of Ms.
Brody", "Taste of Honey", "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning",
"Georgy Girl" and American Beatnik literatures in a very beautifully
made but also very frgile Venetian glass flask. In UK, they already released
2 albums and 3 singles. A very first album, "Tigermilk" was released
limited number only in UK and very hard to get nowadays. You have no difficulties
getting their materials in UK. In Japan, as far as I know Tower Records
is getting Belle and Sebastian singles at their stores quicker than other
shops like HMV, Virgin. Virgin stores in Tokyo is the most hopeless. They
don't have good selection of alternative CDs. In Japan, Belle and Sebastian
is recognised as a very stylish band and every clitic you can see in Japan,
they all start saying "Belle and Sebastian, a new sparkling star from
Glasgow and being said as the minstrels of modern times" No exeption,
every on of them stars with this line even at the record shop's recomendation
clip on the CD rack. I really love Belle and Sebastian, it's OK listening
them at home but I couldn't like them on Walkman for everyday's journey
to work. I felt those train rush hour and seeing tired out office people
in a similar clothes are too realistic to listen to Belle and Sebastian.
Anyway, if you are interested, check out their official fan club site!
